Food and agriculture are fundamentally interdependent, with agriculture serving as the foundation of all food systems and food representing the primary outcome of agricultural activity. Agricultural production provides the essential raw materials—grains, fruits, vegetables, livestock, and beverages—that constitute the human diet, while patterns of food demand determine the structure, scale, and practices of agricultural systems. This interrelationship extends beyond biological sustenance to encompass cultural, social, and economic dimensions, as food traditions, dietary practices, and culinary identities are directly shaped by agricultural production. From an economic perspective, the global food industry is critically dependent on agricultural outputs, and evidence demonstrates that investments in agriculture enhance food security by improving availability, affordability, quality, and safety. Moreover, food and agriculture together occupy a central position in addressing contemporary global challenges, including poverty reduction, nutrition security, and climate change adaptation. In this context, agriculture cannot be understood in isolation from food systems, as the two operate in a dynamic and reciprocal relationship that influences health, cultural continuity, economic stability, and sustainable development.
